New York City Photo Walking Tours

Central Park Bow Bridge
Strawberry Fields, Central Park West at 72nd St.

Springtime is coming soon and there's nothing like taking a walk through Manhattan, starting at Central Park, and ending up Downtown at the Freedom Tower.  Stopping along the way to Times Square, Rockefeller Center,  then hoping on the Number 6 subway to Union Square to begin our walk through the heart of the village with many photo opportunities at Washington Square Park,
MacDougal and Bleeker Streets  Then working our way south through Soho, Little Italy,  Chinatown and finally at the World Trade Center Memorial Park.
These are just a few suggestions on planning a day to walk, browse, eat, drink along the way. Most of all its what you really want to see, photograph,  and absorb in this amazing metropolis called NYC.

Shooting Panoramic Images In Low light

Lower Manhattan during a beautiful sunset.

NYC skyline from Blvd East, Weehawken, NJ

Photographing beautiful panoramic Images are really wonderful to do. You go out find a place you want to photograph, sit and be amazed at its beauty, looking at every detail possible that you want to portray in your shot. For example, the reflections on the water, overall color balance, and most importantly the lighting. You don't want to over-shoot and blast out the color because of the lighting or the lack of it.
On these Images I used a tripod, my trusty Nikon D90 with a Nikon DX 18-105 Lens. Always adjusting ISO, Aperture, Shutter-speeds, until you feel what you see, as you enjoy the beautiful views surrounding you. Digital cameras are awesome because no matter how many you shoot, you can always delete the unfavored. On these Images it turned out that I kept my ISO at 200,
my aperture at F9, and shutter speed at 1/8 of a second, which is very slow as photography is concerned. Also set my Image quality to RAW, which gives me the latitude I need once my Images are on my Mac. Tripod helps so the camera doesn't move during the long exposure not blurring the Image. Then once on your computer, you can crop, adjust accordingly until you feel its the closest to what you saw on that beautiful time. The final results made me smile remembering how beautiful the place really was.
Remember, no matter where you shoot, just take the time to look, enjoy, and experiment with your camera and settings to make it fun. The final result will surprise you. Keep shooting and let me know how its going.

As always,
Gerry

Sand Hook Lighthouse, Gateway National Park, N.J.

Sandy Hook Lighthouse is the oldest working lighthouse in the United States. It was designed and built in 1764 by Isaac Conro. At that time, it stood only 500 feet from the tip of Sandy Hook; however, today, due to growth caused by littoral drift, it is almost one and a half miles inland from the tip.
The light was built to aid mariners entering the southern end of the New York Harbor. It was originally called New York Lighthouse because it was funded through a New York Assembly lottery and a tax on all ships entering the Port of New York. Sandy Hook Light has endured an attempt to destroy it as an aid to British navigation by Benjamin Tupper, and a subsequent occupancy of British soldiers during the Revolutionary War.
Sandy Hook Lighthouse, which was restored in spring 2000, is part of the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. During summer weekends, the New Jersey Lighthouse Society offers free tours every half hour from 12:00 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Definitely a to-do whenever your in the area.
Thanks for your time.

As Always,
Gerry

Dunnfield Creek - Worthington State Forest - New Jersey

The Appalachian Trail, stretches over two thousand miles from Georgia to Maine, enters New Jersey at the Delaware Water Gap in Worthington State Forest. The Jersey section gives a view and a feeling of what this area must of been like two hundred years ago. Dunnfield Creek runs down along the trail coming from the spring fed Sunfish Pond four miles above emptying into the Delaware River. I came upon the perfect place to rest, drink some water, and admire this pristine place. I really started to 'look' at the beauty of the creek in front of me with the harmonious sounds of running water which truly inspired me. A very peaceful place to be indeed absorbing the beauty of mother nature. Shooting this was just adjustments on my Nikon D90 using the aperture mode. at 3.5 and a shutter speed of one second with a ISO set at 800 adjusting it as I viewed the image. My philosophy is to take the time to really look at your subject or view and try to shoot just as you see it keeping true to the shades of the wonderful colors abound. I hope it inspires you to check it out and take in the beauty as I did. If your ever in the area and have the time it's definitely worth the hike. Check out some more of my 'Rivers of New Jersey' Images on my web site in the Events tab, clicking on Galleries. Thanks for your time and keep shooting. If you journey there, drop me a line and let me know how you liked it.

Help the Japanese people

Its so hard to imagine the plight of the Japanese people during this tragic time of need. As we live in a country that makes us feel safe to count our blessings, lets remember the misfortunes of other races and countrys not so fortunate. I've had the pleasure to travel in Japan enjoying the wonderful culture, people, and spectacular views which abound the country. Watching this tragedy unfold, like many others feel helpless, knowing what these people are dealing with searching for loved ones under a mountain of wreckage which extends for kilometers
inland. But we can help by donating a little to the Red Cross. Or by Texting "Red Cross" to 90999 =$10 on bill. I feel good that at least from 12,000 miles away I helped in some way. I contacted people I know, and they are scared but safe, especially in Tokyo where buildings swayed and transportation halted. At least the're safe, not like the people of Miyagi Perfecture.
This YouTube video says it all. Please think about and pray for the souls of the lost and the plight of the living in North Japan. Anything you can donate will make a difference.

Editing Images in Photoshop to a Painting Effect.

Before
After

First of all Hello again and best of the New Year to you all! Been Playing around with Photoshop effects, and like the way you can create a painting look to your Images. I placed Two of my Stone Bridge, Paulinskill River, Warren County, N.J. Refection Image here. One original and one worked in Photoshop using the 'Artistic' Effect under Filter drop down and playing around with brush strokes. Interesting the contrast of before and after. Using my originals, I can create a digital photo Image into a piece of 'Desktop Art' using to tools Photoshop has to offer.
